The Naked City, the Movie

The Naked City

1948

Director:
Jules Dassin

Screenplay:
Albert Maltz and Malvin Wald

Cast:
Barry Fitzgerald, Howard Duff, and Ted de Corsia

Overview:
Producer Mark Hellinger created this film with a documentary-like style which depicts the inner-workings of the New York City Police Department. Hellinger's voice-over narration adds to the documentary flavor. The film cashed in on the fact-driven, location-shot style that moved crime drama away from the look of the studio film.
The cinematographer William Daniels and editor Paul Weatherwax received Oscars. The film inspired a popular television series by the same name and popularized the phrase: "There are eight million stories in the naked city."

Rating:

Format: DVD VHS
